Way Down on the Suwannee

We took the day and traveled west to the massive metropolitan area known as White Springs, Florida. There must have been at least two dozen red necks living in shacks out there in the swamplands, it was incredible! We took a day hike through the Florida back woods to the Big Shoals on the Suwannee River... basically just a bunch of rocks. Overall it was pretty cool to see though, lots of birds walking in the shallow tea-colored water, massive man eating spiders, and loads of tree roots in the path making it difficult to push the stroller carrying a very enthused, sleeping child. We sat in the sand along the bank and Paul enjoyed a graham cracker before we noticed the log drifting in the water a short distance away. Turns out, there are gators in these parts, and some large enough to make a snack out of little land dwellers such as Paul. So we hightailed it out of there before he came to say hello. Check out the pictures!

Dear Sellers Family,
So glad that you got out our way to see some of the sights. If the river had been higher, you would have seen Floridas only class 3 rapids roaring over that "bunch of rocks" and it would have been too swift for Mr. Gator. It didn't sound like you spent much time in town. Yes, we do have our fair share of shacks but we also have a large historic district with over 150 homes in it. Your little boy might enjoy coming back someday when he is a little older to see the Stephen Foster State Folk Culture Center, a Florida State park with a museum, one of the worlds largest carrilon towers and a craft square with gift shop that features craftsmen demonstrating their work. Also in town is the Florida State Nature and Heritage tourism welcome center that features information about all the real things to do in any area of Florida other than amusement parks and the beach. On Memorial day weekend we host the Florida Folk Festival and thousands of people have been coming for over fifty years. Hope that you will come back and enjoy!

I am looking forward to going to the Suwanee river next time I visit thanks to Sam.
I think we should find out when the best time to visit is. Nothing like a l ocal person to tell you what else is around to see.
I am proud of you guys for not trying to get a photo with Paul and the Gator, that is what tourist types do in MT with the wildlife here.
So next time I am down to enjoy Florida and Paul it will be a Suwanee river adventure.
Love Granny G

I think next time we get to sunny Florida, we'll pass on the giant bugs and swimming gators.......Thank you just the same. We too, are proud you didn't try and take a photo of Paul and a real gator! We really enjoy checking in to see the pictures and to read the comments...even those by the less intelligent side of the Sellers family. We love you all !!
